July 9, 1868 – 14th Amendment is Ratified

This constitutional amendment held that states cannot deprive a person of life, liberty or property without due process of law or deny people the equal protection of the laws. The 14th Amendment has also been used to invalidate restrictive covenants based on race and ethnicity and exclusionary zoning practices such as was the case in United States v. Yonkers, the subject of the HBO Series, Show Me a Hero. Indeed, the U.S. Supreme Court held, as early as 1917 in

    Buchanan v. Warley

, that restrictive covenants violated the 14th Amendment.
